Last Call

Smith Island waterman Lester Tyler crab scraping in Tangier Sound at the mouth of the Annemessex River. A crab scrape is a type of gear used to harvest blue crab “peelers” that are ready to go through the molting process. Peeler crabs are brought to crab shanties where they shed in floats with recirculating water. After shedding, the crabs are considered soft crabs. Soft crabs are packed and shipped from the islands to markets in Crisfield and New York.
