Uppards Cemetery

A cemetery dating back to the 1800s eroding into the Bay on the northern end of Tangier Island. The “Uppards,” as islanders call the north end, was a community until the 1930s. Residents of Uppards recognized the erosion that was occurring and moved their homes to the town of Tangier. The northern end of Tangier is extremely vulnerable to erosion and is losing approximately 10–15 feet of land per year.
